Please let this letter serve as my full endorsement for your run to become Sheriff of Somerset County. I am a senior citizen residing in Somerset County who also happens to be a registered Republican. I consider myself fair and open minded and have on occasion voted across party lines when I felt that a candidate’s vision more closely aligned with mine. After having met you, I followed up by viewing your biography, and I realized that you were a candidate that I could support. Here are my reasons:
Your work with the youth of your community.
From personal experience, I know how important it is to a young person to have someone believe in them and work with them. It can change the direction of their life. Whether it is through coaching, serving as a mentor, or the development of youth programs, you have taken the time to make a difference in many young lives. Your participation in and continued support of youth programs is something I strongly endorse.
Your commitment to develop a plan for additional security in our schools.
You have served as a resource officer for one of the largest high schools in our county. I feel that you have a good solid understanding of what needs to be done to insure that our schools are safe places for our children. Law enforcement and school administrators shoulder a heavy burden of ensuring student safety. Having a Sheriff with your law enforcement training and experience will help to develop a plan that will be valuable for years to come.
Your commitment to the business community to develop a safety and active shooter plan.
People who work in our county have a need to feel safe in their work environment. This does not get very much attention in the media but is an important component to the economic viability and health of our county. Administrators in charge of the safety and health of the employees of their companies also shoulder a heavy burden. Your commitment of outreach to the business community, I believe, will be extremely beneficial to them as they develop or improve their existing safety protocols.
I have been a resident of Franklin Township for over 30 years and in that time I’ve seen many changes. One change I hope to see in 2019 is your election to the office of Sheriff of Somerset County.

Dear Sgt Akins and Ofc Barnett,
On behalf of the Journey to Manhood program and Visions and Pathways, I’d Like like to express my sincere appreciation to you for the taking time from your schedules to spend time with our boys.
Based on the amount of time you locked the boys’ attention, the discussion you led was the best Journey to Manhood session I’ve experienced. And there is no doubt in my mind the sharing of your personal experiences including the advice Sgt Akins gives to his own boys, brought true legitimacy to the words spoken. I also have no doubt you planted seeds in those boys that will make a difference in their lives. Even if they are never pulled over, the perspective you presented changed their perspective.
Again, I cant thank you enough. Journey to Manhood is to provide the boys with the knowledge they need to see, generate, and take advantage of the positive opportunities life has to offer. The wisdom you shared increases the chances the opportunities they face are indeed positive ones.

I am pleased to write this letter of support for Arthur Akins for his candidacy as Somerset County Sheriff.
It has been my great pleasure to work with Mr. Akins in his capacity as a township police officer. In addition to many years of service to the township police–Mr. Akins served as a school resource officer at Bridgewater-Raritan High School. As a administrator in the district for many years–I saw him work with students and adults in a highly competent, caring manner, while upholding the law. It was through his work that the school averted a major security threat in 2009. Mr. Akins was an exemplary officer and was of great value to both the school and the community at-large.
Working with Mr. Akins for many years, I can attest to his character and commitment to the community. Mr. Akins has not only extensive experience in law enforcement, he has volunteered his time to many community organizations. Having seen Mr. Akins in both capacities, I can tell you he is a pillar of the community. He consistently demonstrated high moral and ethical values, a strong work ethic, and a concern for individuals in the community at large.
In this day of political toxicity, I highly endorse Mr. Akins. His experience, character, work-ethic, and judgement will be of great benefit to all residents of Somerset County.

I was made aware that you are running for the position of Sheriff for Somerset County. Upon hearing this news, I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you to express my excitement and to wish you the best of luck. The news of your candidacy also gave me a reason to pause and reflect on a number of things.
First and foremost, leaders of today must never lose touch with the people they serve. Political affiliations aside; the role of leaders must be to put service above self and accurately represent their constituents. I take comfort knowing that you personify that characteristic. For as long as I’ve known you, you have always done just that. Your ability to relate and communicate with people is a trait that will serve you will in the endeavor.
Additionally, I would be remiss if I did not mention words like commitment, dedication, morals, ethics, and character. Art, you are an individual that truly exemplifies those words. In a world where it is often not difficult to find examples of the contrary, you have always proven to be an individual that upholds those beliefs as the foundation of your life.
Again, congratulations on your decision to run for the position of Sheriff for Somerset County. You are the type of person makes a difference and has a positive impact on those around you. Congratulations and Best of Luck!

“I am pleased to endorse Art Akins for Somerset County Sheriff. I have known Art since we were classmates in Somerville Public Schools (and Boy Scouts in Somerville’s Troop 84). Art has dedicated his life to public service – as a United States Marine, in his career in local law enforcement, and as a volunteer fireman, coach and youth mentor. Art Akins has the right experience, character and values to lead the Sheriff’s office on behalf of the people of Somerset County, the community where he has lived and served proudly for 50 years.”
