Life of Service
Art Akins is a career law-enforcement officer and United States Marine. He was inspired to serve as a police officer by his father, the late Willie L. Akins, who was the first African-American police officer in Somerville. Art resides in Somerville with his wife, Melissa, and their three sons, AJ, Ty, and Peyton, and is running for the Somerset County Sheriff.
Art has always been involved in the community as a volunteer fireman for the Somerville Hook and Ladder, a Pop Warner Football Coach, and recently, as a mentor for youths in the Journey to Manhood Program at Visions and Pathways. He also has shown his honor and respect for fallen officers as a member of the Police Unity Tour where his fundraising efforts have generated $30,000.
He graduated from West Virginia University with a BS in physical education and from Centenary College with a Master of Arts degree in Leadership and Public Administration. His lifetime of service to community, county, and country has garnered recognition; including:
- Two US Marine Corp Meritorious Mast awards for outstanding service
- Dwayne Reeves School Resource Officer of the Year Award
- Recognition Award by the 2010 graduating class of Bridgewater-Raritan High School
- Somerset County Police Academy Prosecutor’s Achievement Award
Art’s commitment to serving others has enabled his vision for the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office as our community’s population expands and evolves. Art believes that a strong partnership between law-enforcement and the community is required for safety and security.
His experience as a School Resource Officer at Bridgewater-Raritan High School and active-shooter instructor have ingrained a deep understanding of how these programs can be expanded and applied to other facets of our community.
Art also believes that the practice of youth mentor-ship pays off for decades to come. His passion was sparked as a volunteer for youth programs and he was one of the original founders of the Somerset County Police Academy Youth Week.
Businesses are a vital part of our community and Art plans to extend active-shooter training and other safety protocols to Somerset County businesses and corporations.
